South Carolina banned weight lifting in prisons effective early in July 1995 according to a report in the Local Forum section the of Sept. 1995 ACA Publication On the Line. This article is available in our Issues Segment, Media Issues section.

A Bill to amend the Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, by adding Section
24-1-290 so as to prohibit the Department of Corrections from providing or
permitting exercise equipment for use by prisoners, to provide that any such
equipment owned by the Department must be donated to law enforcement agencies
throughout the State in the manner the General Assembly shall provide, and to
provide any such equipment not owned by the Department but located in any of its
facilities must be returned to the owner within thirty days of the effective
date of this Section.
